A doctoral dissertation at the College of Science, Al-Qadisiyah University, entitled “Evaluation of Ibuprofen Biodegradation by Bacterial Strains Isolated from Wastewater Treatment Plants,” by researcher Ali Mohsen Mohammed, supervised by Prof. Dr. Alaa Fahem Abbas and Prof. Dr. Haider Mashkour Hussein, investigated the isolation of four local bacterial strains from wastewater treatment plants in hospitals in Hilla. The study tested their ability to utilize ibuprofen as a sole source of carbon and energy. The results showed that these strains are capable of removing more than 99% of ibuprofen concentrations under controlled laboratory conditions. The metabolic pathways and genes responsible for the degradation process were identified using LC-MS/MS and whole-genome sequencing (NGS).
