About the University
Al-Qadisiyah University was established in 1987 with two colleges, the College of Education and the College of Management and Economics. In the next academic year the College of Arts was opened. Soon, other colleges were opened in the center of Al-Qadisiyah governorate, as well as the center of the governorates of Wasit and Muthanna. From these colleges the nucleus of a separate university was yielded, the University of Wasit, and later another university in Samawah under the name of Al-Muthanna University. Over the years, its faculties have increased, its departments have grown and its laboratories have developed. The University today consists of the following colleges: College of Education, College of Management and Economics, College of Arts, College of Veterinary Medicine, College of Medicine, College of Physical Education, College of Sciences, College of Computer Science and Mathematics, College of Agriculture, College of Law, College of Engineering, College of Education for Women, College of Pharmacy, and College of Nursing.
With regard to postgraduate studies, it has begun at the University of Al-Qadisiyah since 1993 in the College of Education to obtain the Master’s degree. Then, it expanded to include the Colleges of Management and Economics, Arts, Physical Education and Veterinary Medicine. As for doctoral degree, it was opened in the academic year 1998-1999 in the College of Education, departments of Biology and History. Later, it was also opened at the College of Managements and Economics and the College of Arts, departments of Arabic language, Geography and Sociology. The university is continuing its efforts to advance its future plans in a manner appropriate for its being a scientific, cultural and social edifice that illuminates the darkness of ignorance and besieges the margins of backwardness and eliminates them in a way that reflects the civilization of Iraq and its bright history and its prosperous future. It is also worth mentioning here that The University of Al-Qadisiyah has also taken upon itself to expand its cultural and media base by constructing the cultural and social center in the university and employing experts in the fields of media and journalism to implement its various plans, which include issuing our newspaper “university thoughts”, and holding a number of festivals and conferences that had large turnouts.
The university is a member of the union of the Arab World Universities and the union of the Islamic World Universities. The buildings of the university are distributed over several sites. The main campus is situated in North Diwaniyah, next to Al-Hakeem neighborhood. This campus comprises the colleges of Education, Sciences, Arts, Veterinary Medicine, Computer Science and Mathematics, Education for women, and Physical Education. The Colleges of Medicine and Nursing are located behind Diwaniyah General Hospital. The College of Engineering is located near the main compound of the university. Many Arab students graduated from the university, especially from Jordan, Palestine and Yemen.
