A PhD project at the College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Al-Qadisiyah, has led to the development of a novel candidate vaccine against Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) in chickens.

The College of Veterinary Medicine at Al-Qadisiyah examined the PhD thesis titled “Synthesis and Analysis of a Self-Amplifying Multi-Epitope mRNA Vaccine against Infectious Bronchitis Virus in Chickens,” authored by Abbas Hadi Jassim Al-Musawi. The research was supervised by Prof. Dr. Haider Naji Yareed Al-Hajjami and Asst. Prof. Dr. Amjad Talib Mohsen Al-Sultan.

The study successfully developed a novel self-amplifying multi-epitope mRNA vaccine candidate against IBV. IBV is a significant viral disease affecting poultry, causing substantial health and economic impacts on the poultry production sector.

The study results demonstrated the vaccine’s efficacy in eliciting a robust immune response—including both humoral and cellular immunity—against the virus. It offers a comprehensive immunological approach that may contribute to controlling the spread of diverse and mutated viral strains.  The thesis concluded by discussing a promising strategic candidate for addressing Infectious Bronchitis in chickens, highlighting its demonstrated ability to stimulate both humoral and cell-mediated immune responses.

The study recommended conducting further advanced experimental and clinical research to assess the candidate’s safety and efficacy against various viral strains and variants, paving the way for new insights into virus control programs within the poultry sector.
