The Department of Medicinal Chemistry at the College of Medicine, Al-Qadisiyah University, discussed the Master’s thesis entitled “Biochemical Evaluation of Exposure to Heavy Metals and Carcinogenic Compounds in Residents Living Near Power Generation Plants: A Clinical Biochemical Study,” by researcher Haider Aneid Obaid, supervised by Professor Dr. Aajil Abdul Hussein Jassim

This thesis aimed to evaluate carcinogenic factors, heavy metals, and antioxidant capacity among residents living near power plants by calculating probability values, Pearson correlation coefficients, area under the curve, and operational characteristic curves to assess the discriminatory power of the tests.

Key recommendations include conducting periodic blood tests and liver and kidney function tests for exposed populations to detect the effects of lead, cadmium, and other pollutants early; continuous monitoring of air, water, soil, vegetation, and emissions around power plants; using modern technologies to reduce pollutants; raising public awareness about pollution risks and prevention methods; and strengthening cooperation between environmental and health authorities and researchers.
