A Master’s thesis in the Department of Environment at the College of Science, Al-Qadisiyah University, entitled “Food Safety Assessment of Imported Fish Using ICP-OES for Heavy Metal and Biochemical Compound Analysis in Iraqi Markets,” was presented by researcher Manan Rahim Daish and supervised by Professor Dr. Haider Mashkour Hussein

This study aimed to evaluate the food safety and nutritional value of several imported fish species sold in Iraqi markets. This was achieved by measuring the concentrations of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Ni, Zn) using ICP-OES technology and determining the protein, fat, and ash content.

The study revealed variations in heavy metal concentrations among different species. Lead concentrations ranged from 5.60 to 131.20 ppb, with significant differences in nutritional content and oxidative stress indicators depending on the fish species and preservation method.

The study recommended strengthening continuous monitoring of imported fish, particularly species most susceptible to heavy metal accumulation. It also recommended examining packaging materials and tracking the transfer of metals from these materials to canned products. Furthermore, the study recommended adopting a comprehensive assessment that combines heavy metals, nutritional value, oxidative stress indicators, and cumulative risk assessment models. The goal is to protect public health and improve the safety of the imported fish supply chain in Iraq.
