The aim of this study was to study the prevalence of Toxoplasma gondii parasite, which causes miscarriage in pregnant women and birth defects, in local and imported red meat and its products in local markets using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) technique and microscopic isolation of the parasite using pepsin digestion method and the extent of contamination of these meats and their products which are used for human consumption. It was observed that local meat is more contaminated with the parasite than imported meat. This may be due to the fact that imported meats and their products are exposed to freezing for long periods, which leads to killing the parasite, unlike fresh local meat.
