Heritage Houses in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate

A Master’s thesis was discussed at the College of Archaeology at the University of Al-Qadisiyah, entitled “Heritage Houses in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate: A Field Study”, presented by the researcher Saif Hudayb Fadel Saidan, under the supervision of Assistant Professor Dr. Rajwan Faisal Al-Miyali.

The thesis conducted a field study on the heritage houses in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate, where the researcher provided a historical overview of the governorate and highlighted the circumstances it experienced, with a particular focus on the impact of the environment and social conditions on the design and planning of heritage houses.

The study reached several conclusions, most notably the significance of heritage houses in Al-Diwaniyah Governorate, as they represent an important part of Iraq’s history and illustrate the nature of local architecture that has evolved over the centuries. It also showed the diversity of heritage house styles according to social classes, noting the differences between houses of the general public and those of the elite, varying in shapes, sizes, and decorations.

Additionally, the study emphasized the attention to architectural details, revealing that architects in Al-Diwaniyah relied on precise planning for houses, with special care given to the decoration of walls and architectural elements such as arches, columns, buttresses, and entrances.
